About the letter P — sound, shape, and words
Letter P makes the /p/ sound — a voiceless bilabial stop. The lips press together and then release with a pop of air, as in parrot, pen, and purple. P is the voiceless partner of B — same lip movement, but no vocal cord vibration. Children often confuse lowercase p, b, d, and q — tracing practice helps distinguish them.
How to form the letter P
Uppercase P: draw a straight vertical line from top to bottom, then add a bump on the upper right side only — like the letter B but with only the top bump. Lowercase p: draw a vertical line from the mid-line down below the baseline, then add a circular bump on the right side at the top of the vertical line, sitting between the mid-line and the baseline.

Use these words while tracing to connect the letter shape to a sound: Parrot, Pen, Purple, Pencil, Penguin, Panda, Puzzle, Peach. Say P — Parrot while tracing. The /p/ sound pops — children can hold their hand in front of their mouth and feel a small puff of air on each /p/.

Common mistake to avoid
Many parents skip straight to the free-write section. This feels faster but skips the motor-learning phase — children end up with shaky, inconsistent letterforms. Let the tracing rows do their job first. The free-write section is the reward, not the shortcut.
