All 13 Hindi Swar — अ to अः
The 13 Swar are the vowel sounds of Hindi. Unlike English vowels, Hindi Swar are completely independent letters — each has its own distinct character and sound. Learning to write them builds the foundation for all further Hindi reading and writing.
What is on each Swar worksheet
Trace the Swar
Each worksheet shows the Swar in a large dotted outline. Children trace the shape slowly, focusing on the starting point and stroke direction — exactly as a teacher would demonstrate.
See the example word
Below each letter is a picture word beginning with that Swar — अनार (Anaar), आम (Aam), इमली (Imli). Connecting the letter to a word accelerates recognition and gives children something to say aloud as they trace.
Write from memory
After tracing, open rows at the bottom invite children to write the Swar without a guide. This recall step is the most important — it is where tracing becomes real writing.
How to teach Hindi Swar at home
Start with the short vowels अ, इ, उ before moving to the long vowels आ, ई, ऊ. Children naturally hear the difference between short and long sounds in spoken Hindi — the worksheet reinforces what they already know aurally. Say each Swar name aloud as your child traces: this audio-motor link dramatically speeds up retention.
The vowels ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ are typically introduced after the basic six. The Anusvara (अं) and Visarga (अः) are taught last, as they modify other letters rather than standing alone in most words. If your child is in Nursery or LKG, focus on the first 6–8 Swar before moving further.
Frequently asked questions
How many Swar are in Hindi?
Standard Hindi has 13 Swar: अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, अं, and अः. Some older syllabi list 16 Swar by including additional vowels, but the 13-Swar set is what NCERT and most school curricula use for early childhood.
What is the difference between Swar and Matra?
Swar are the standalone vowel letters (अ, आ, इ…). Matra are the short symbols that represent the same vowel sounds when attached to a consonant — for example, ा (aa-matra) is the Matra form of आ. Children learn Swar as full letters first; Matra are introduced once they begin reading words formed with consonants.
At what age should a child learn Hindi Swar?
Most children begin recognising and tracing Hindi Swar between ages 3.5 and 5 — typically during Nursery and LKG. Children in UKG (ages 5–6) should be able to write all 13 Swar from memory. If your child is just starting, begin with अ, आ, इ, and add two or three new Swar each week.
