All 33 Hindi Vyanjan — क to ह
The 33 Vyanjan are the consonants of Hindi, arranged in seven groups (Vargas) based on their place of articulation in the mouth and throat. This systematic arrangement is one of the most logical features of the Devanagari script.
The seven Varga groups
Understanding the Varga system helps children see patterns in how letters sound and look. Letters within the same Varga share similar mouth positions — this is why ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण (all retroflex) look and feel similar to produce. Teaching Vyanjan by Varga rather than in isolation reduces confusion.
| Varga | Letters | Sound group |
|---|---|---|
| क वर्ग (Ka Varga) | क ख ग घ ङ | Throat sounds (Velar) |
| च वर्ग (Cha Varga) | च छ ज झ ञ | Palate sounds (Palatal) |
| ट वर्ग (Ta Varga) | ट ठ ड ढ ण | Retroflex sounds |
| त वर्ग (Ta Varga) | त थ द ध न | Dental sounds |
| प वर्ग (Pa Varga) | प फ ब भ म | Lip sounds (Bilabial) |
| अन्तस्थ | य र ल व | Semi-vowels |
| ऊष्म | श ष स ह | Fricatives / Sibilants |
How to teach Hindi Vyanjan effectively
Always introduce Vyanjan after the child is confident with all 13 Swar. When tracing क, say both the letter name (Ka) and a word (कमल — Kamal) aloud. The sound-shape-word triple connection is what moves a letter from short-term tracing memory into long-term reading recall.
Teach one Varga at a time over a week — five letters per Varga fits naturally into a five-day school week. Start with Ka Varga (क ख ग घ ङ) since क is the first letter children encounter in most Hindi syllabi and words like कमल, काम, and कल are immediately useful.
Frequently asked questions
How many Vyanjan are in Hindi?
Standard Hindi has 33 Vyanjan. Some extended syllabi add ड़ and ढ़ (retroflex flaps) bringing the count to 35, and some include ज़, फ़ for loan words. The 33-letter set is what is taught in NCERT Hindi from Class 1 onward and is what this worksheet covers.
What is the difference between Vyanjan and Matra?
Vyanjan are the full consonant letters (क, ख, ग…). Matra are the vowel signs that attach to Vyanjan to change their sound — for example, क + ा = का (Kaa), क + ि = कि (Ki). Children learn to write the standalone Vyanjan first; Matra worksheets follow once the letters are secure.
Is this worksheet suitable for Class 1?
Yes. The NCERT Class 1 Hindi (Rimjhim) curriculum introduces all Vyanjan by the end of the year. This worksheet covers the full set and follows the standard Varga sequence used in school. It is equally suitable for advanced UKG children who have finished the Swar.
Why does Hindi have so many similar-looking consonants?
Letters within the same Varga share visual elements because they share physical production — the retroflex letters (ट ठ ड ढ ण) all involve the tongue curling back to touch the roof of the mouth. The Devanagari script was designed with this phonetic logic in mind. Children who understand the Varga system find it much easier to distinguish similar-looking pairs like ट/त or ठ/थ.
