About the letter U — sound, shape, and words
Letter U makes two main sounds: the short /ʌ/ sound as in umbrella, up, and under — and the long /juː/ sound as in uniform and use. U is a vowel — along with A, E, I, O — and appears across a wide range of common words.
How to form the letter U
Uppercase U: draw a vertical line down from the top, curve along the bottom, then bring a vertical line back up to the top on the right — like a rounded bucket. Lowercase u: start at the mid-line, draw a line down, curve along the bottom, bring a line back up to the mid-line on the right, then draw a short line straight down to the baseline.
Words that start with U
Use these words while tracing to connect the letter shape to a sound: Umbrella, Up, Under, Uncle, Uniform, Unicorn, Umpire. Say U — Umbrella while tracing. The short /ʌ/ sound is a relaxed, open sound — the mouth is open with the tongue sitting low.

Common mistake to avoid
Many parents skip straight to the free-write section. This feels faster but skips the motor-learning phase — children end up with shaky, inconsistent letterforms. Let the tracing rows do their job first. The free-write section is the reward, not the shortcut.
