Why Hindi handwriting matters

Hindi is written in the Devanagari script — one of the most phonetically consistent writing systems in the world. Unlike English, where spelling is often unpredictable, Hindi is almost entirely phonetic: every letter has one sound, and every sound has one letter. This means a child who can recognise and write all 46 letters of the Varnmala can, in principle, read and write any Hindi word they have heard spoken.

Handwriting practice in Devanagari also builds fine motor skills that transfer directly to other writing — the deliberate stroke sequences in letters like क, ग, and ह develop the same pencil control needed for English letters, numbers, and drawing.
