Hindi learning in Indian early childhood education follows a consistent sequence across Nursery, LKG, and UKG — regardless of whether you follow CBSE, ICSE, or a state board. Here is what children are typically expected to cover at each level:
| Class / Level | Age | Hindi targets | Worksheet to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nursery | 3–4 years | Recognise अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ; trace with help | Hindi Swar Worksheet (first 6) |
| LKG | 4–5 years | Write all 13 Swar; trace Vyanjan Ka Varga (क–ङ) | Hindi Swar + Vyanjan Worksheet |
| UKG | 5–6 years | Write full Varnmala; recognise simple words | Hindi Varnmala Worksheet (full) |
| Class 1 | 6–7 years | Write and read all Vyanjan; begin Matra | Hindi Vyanjan + Matra worksheets |
How to use these worksheets for LKG and UKG
For LKG children (ages 4–5), aim for one new Swar or one Varga of Vyanjan per week — that is roughly 5 letters per week, which completes the full Varnmala in about 9 weeks. For UKG children (ages 5–6) who already know the Swar, start directly with the Vyanjan worksheet and work through one Varga per week.
Pair each tracing session (10–15 minutes) with an oral activity: say the letter name aloud, name the example word, then try to think of one more word that starts with that letter. This oral-written combination is significantly more effective than writing practice alone.
If your child resists sitting for a full worksheet, try the Todpoles app between sessions — the Hindi Bubbles game reinforces letter recognition through play, giving children a low-pressure way to revisit letters they struggled with on paper.
Frequently asked questions
Which Hindi worksheet should I start with for Nursery?
Start with the Hindi Swar Worksheet and focus on the first six vowels — अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ. These are the most frequent vowel sounds in spoken Hindi and the ones most Nursery curricula prioritise. Once your child can trace all six, move to the remaining seven Swar before starting any Vyanjan.
Are these worksheets aligned with the NCERT curriculum?
Yes. The Swar-first, Varga-by-Varga Vyanjan sequence follows the structure used in NCERT Class 1 Hindi (Rimjhim) and is consistent with the learning expectations for Nursery, LKG, and UKG across CBSE-affiliated schools. The specific words used as examples (कमल, आम, हाथी, etc.) are drawn from the standard early childhood Hindi word list.
How often should my child practise Hindi writing?
For Nursery and LKG children, 3–4 sessions per week of 10–15 minutes each is more effective than longer, less frequent sessions. Hindi handwriting requires sustained fine motor development — short daily practice builds this gradually without fatigue. For UKG children preparing for Class 1, daily 15-minute sessions are appropriate.
Do you have Hindi Matra worksheets?
Matra worksheets are the next step after a child is confident writing all 33 Vyanjan. We are currently developing Matra worksheets covering आ की मात्रा (ा), इ की मात्रा (ि), उ की मात्रा (ु), and so on. Follow Todpoles on the app to be notified when they are released.
Is the Todpoles app suitable for LKG and UKG children?
Yes. Todpoles is designed for children aged 2–7, which covers the full Nursery to UKG range. The app includes Hindi flash cards for all Swar and Vyanjan, and the Hindi Bubbles game reinforces letter recognition through interactive play. It is free to download, has no ads, and is COPPA compliant.
