Swar — Hindi Vowels (अ to अः)
There are 13 Swar in Hindi. These are the vowel sounds that form the foundation of every word. Children learning to read and write Hindi always begin with Swar — they are the building blocks that give Vyanjan their sounds.

Vyanjan — Hindi Consonants (क to ह)
There are 33 Vyanjan in Hindi, organised into five groups (Vargas) based on where the sound is produced in the mouth — from the throat (क, ख, ग…) to the lips (प, फ, ब…). Tracing each consonant alongside its Varga builds sound-shape connections that pure memorisation cannot.

Why the Varnmala sequence matters
The traditional Swar-then-Vyanjan sequence is not arbitrary — it mirrors how Hindi pronunciation is built. Vowels are independent sounds; consonants in Hindi are always combined with a vowel sound (inherent or explicit). Children who learn the Swar first can recognise the vowel markers (matras) when they appear on Vyanjan, making word reading significantly faster. This worksheet follows that traditional sequence exactly as taught in NCERT Class 1 Hindi syllabi.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Hindi Varnmala worksheet free to download?
Yes — the worksheet is completely free. No sign-up, no watermark, no payment. Download the PDF and print as many copies as your child needs.
What age is this Hindi Varnmala worksheet suitable for?
This worksheet is designed for children aged 3–7 — covering Nursery, LKG (Lower Kindergarten), UKG (Upper Kindergarten), and Class 1. Younger children (3–4) can trace one row at a time; children aged 5–7 can work through a full letter per sitting.
How many letters are in the Hindi Varnmala?
The standard Hindi Varnmala has 46 letters: 13 Swar (vowels) and 33 Vyanjan (consonants). Some syllabi include additional letters (like ड़, ढ़, and ज़), bringing the count to 52, but the 46-letter version is standard for early childhood education.
Should my child learn Swar or Vyanjan first?
Always start with Swar (vowels). The 13 Swar are fewer in number, simpler in shape, and form the sound system that Vyanjan depend on. Most school syllabi — including the NCERT Class 1 Rimjhim curriculum — introduce all Swar before moving to Vyanjan.
Can I use this worksheet for LKG and UKG homework?
Yes. The tracing format is specifically designed for the fine motor skills of LKG and UKG children (ages 4–6). The dotted letter guides reduce frustration, and the blank practice rows at the end build independent writing skill.
