Letter R makes the /r/ sound — a voiced approximant. The tongue curls slightly back and the sides touch the upper back teeth, as in rabbit, rain, and road. R is one of the trickier sounds for young children to produce clearly — it often develops later than other consonants.

How to form the letter R

Uppercase R: draw a straight vertical line from top to bottom, add a bump on the upper right (like the letter P), then add a diagonal leg from the bottom of the bump down to the lower right. Lowercase r: start at the mid-line, draw a short line down, then curve up and to the right with a small arch — stopping at the mid-line without fully closing.
