About the letter Q — sound, shape, and words
Letter Q almost always appears with the letter U, making the /kw/ sound as in queen, quiz, and quiet. It is one of the rarest letters in English text, but children enjoy learning it because of its distinctive shape and the fun /kw/ sound.
How to form the letter Q
Uppercase Q: draw a closed oval (like the letter O), then add a short diagonal line in the lower right — like a small tail. The tail is what makes Q unique. Lowercase q: draw a small circle (like lowercase o), then bring a tall straight line down from the right side — the line goes below the baseline. The opposite of lowercase p.
Words that start with Q
Use these words while tracing to connect the letter shape to a sound: Queen, Quiz, Quiet, Quick, Quill, Quack, Quarter. Say Q — Queen while tracing. Remind children that Q almost always comes with U — queen, quiet, quiz — they are best friends in the alphabet.

Common mistake to avoid
Many parents skip straight to the free-write section. This feels faster but skips the motor-learning phase — children end up with shaky, inconsistent letterforms. Let the tracing rows do their job first. The free-write section is the reward, not the shortcut.
