Letter N makes the /n/ sound — a voiced alveolar nasal. The tongue tip touches just behind the upper teeth and air flows through the nose, as in nest, night, and nut. N is the nasal companion to M — children who can produce M usually pick up N quickly.

How to form the letter N

Uppercase N: draw a vertical line down, then a diagonal line up to the upper right, then a vertical line back down — like a zigzag connecting two posts. Lowercase n: start at the mid-line, draw a hump up and over to the right landing on the baseline — a single arch. Half of lowercase m.
