About the letter J — sound, shape, and words
Letter J makes the /dʒ/ sound — a voiced affricate. It starts like a D and ends like the sound in measure, as in jar, jump, and jungle. J is one of the less common letters in English but appears in many high-interest words for children.
How to form the letter J
Uppercase J: draw a straight vertical line from top to bottom, then curve left at the bottom into a hook shape. Add a short horizontal line at the very top. Lowercase j: draw a short vertical line that descends below the baseline, then curve left into a hook. Add a dot above the line at the mid-line.
Words that start with J
Use these words while tracing to connect the letter shape to a sound: Jar, Jump, Jungle, Juice, Jacket, Jellyfish, Jewel. Say J — Jar while tracing. The /dʒ/ sound in J is the same sound at the start of jump and juice — common words children already know.

Common mistake to avoid
Many parents skip straight to the free-write section. This feels faster but skips the motor-learning phase — children end up with shaky, inconsistent letterforms. Let the tracing rows do their job first. The free-write section is the reward, not the shortcut.
